Umbilical Cord

What Is Umbilical Cord Tissue? The umbilical cord is the tissue that connects the mother and the baby and carries essential substances required for the baby's vital functions, such as oxygen and nutrients. Cut and discarded during childbirth, this tissue contains a structure called Wharton's Jelly, which, just like cord blood, cannot be obtained again once lost. This structure contains multipotent stem cells called MESENCHYMAL stem cells, which have the ability to repair all cells, tissues, and organs other than our blood and immune cells.

Mesenchymal stem cells obtained from Wharton's Jelly have been investigated for use in;
  • Autoimmune diseases (Type 1 diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS, etc.),
  • Organ failure (particularly in premature babies),
  • Knee, joint, and cartilage injuries,
  • Chronic diseases (Asthma, COPD, Sjögren's Syndrome, Crohn's disease, Parkinson's disease, Dementia, etc.)
More than 78,000 scientific studies (7,586 studies conducted solely between 2011 and 2022) 5 and clinical studies (58+) 6 have been conducted to date, supported by billions of dollars in research funding worldwide. While research continues to advance each year, mesenchymal stem cells are expected to become part of routine treatment protocols in the future.

What Are the Advantages? Mesenchymal stem cells obtained from Wharton's Jelly have not been exposed to environmental damage compared to other sources of stem cells; they are younger and have a higher capacity for regeneration, repair, and differentiation into different cell types. In the future, when stem cells are needed, the collection process may be operationally painful, while the cells obtained at that time will be older and their effectiveness may be relatively reduced.

Within the family, when needed, cells stored at our center can be prepared for application by producing only a small amount, without the need for any tissue compatibility matching. The remaining cells continue to be stored.
